Frequently Asked Questions

What is tallow?

Grass-fed beef tallow is one of the most nutrient-dense, effective and versatile skincare options available to us. It's simply rendered beef suet, the fat found around the kidneys, known for its remarkable healing properties. All tallow used in Grace Essentials products is sourced from grass-fed and finished, pasture-raised cattle on regenerative farms in Montana or North Dakota. Thanks to the harsh winters these regions face, the cattle develop superior fat to keep them warm through the bitter cold which yields amazing nutrient-rich tallow. Our tallow is only made from suet fat, ensuring the highest quality. It's loaded with healing properties that mimic our skin's structure and it contains the closest fatty acid profile to our own skin and oil, allowing it to be absorbed quickly and easily.

Will I smell like cow?

We promise you won't! Our tallow is rendered and strained by hand in small batches with extra care, using traditional dry rendering methods, to produce essentially odorless tallow. Skilled from years of experience, our supplier puts great care into the tallow she processes. Most people would never guess what our handmade whips and balms are made of if they weren't told. The smell of tallow can change from season to season, depending on the type of grasses the cows are consuming. Because of this, some batches may carry a very light, earthy scent, based on the time of year. This is a testament to the meticulous rendering of our tallow, which yields the highest quality product.  If any scent is present, it will only be in our PURE blend, as there are no herbs or essential oils to mask it.

What is the difference between whipped tallow and tallow balm?

The biggest difference is the texture. Our whipped tallow is lighter and easy to apply - it's like a fluffy hand lotion, with the texture of soft icing. We love to use it as a daily moisturizer because it goes on smooth, allowing for easy application anywhere on your body! Our tallow balms are creamy, offering the thickest healing properties. They're perfect for smaller problem areas because they are more concentrated, similar to a salve. We've found both types work for everything and anything - it really comes down to your personal preference!

What is the shelf life of my tallow skincare?

Tallow is naturally rich in Vitamin E, a natural preservative, which contributes to its long shelf life and remarkable stability. When stored in a cool, dry place, such as an air-conditioned room or a dark cabinet, it can last a long time. We recommend using your tallow skincare products within 9-12 months, as the scent may begin to change after this period. However, based on personal experience, we've found that it can still be used effectively well beyond a year.

Do I need to refrigerate my tallow skincare?

No, refrigeration is not required for your tallow skincare products, as all ingredients are shelf-stable for up to a year under normal storage conditions. However, if you wish to potentially extend the shelf life of your product, you may choose to refrigerate it.

My tallow skincare melted. Is it still good?

Yes. The quality of your product is just as good as when we shipped it to you. Your whip/balm may arrive runny or firm due to varying temperatures in transit - allow time to adjust to room temperature. There are no stabilizers or synthetic additives in our tallow bodycare. Just clean and simple ingredients from nature. This means the products will melt when exposed to high heat.  Keep your tallow skincare in room temperature to maintain texture.  If it does melt, you can easily fix it! It can be re-whipped at room temperature or put in the fridge for a solid balm. To learn more click here.

Are your ingredients all organic?

I carefully source my ingredients from suppliers who are USDA certified or adhere to organic practices that surpass standard requirements. This commitment extends to sourcing our tallow from cows raised on regenerative farms in Montana and North Dakota, ensuring both high quality and environmental stewardship. Our herbs come from certified organic or ethically wildcrafted sources. Our essential oil products are made using Plant Therapy or Young Living essential oils and are organic whenever that option is available to us.

My whip doesn't seem as fluffy as your photos upon arriving, what should I do?

Tallow is a primarily saturated fat, which means its consistency can change with different temperatures. Your tallow blends may arrive runny or firm due to varying temperatures during transit. Allow it time to adjust to room temperature. Placing it in the fridge can accelerate this process if it arrives runny. If your tallow arrives hard due to freezing temperatures, let it settle at room temperature for a few hours. If the texture still doesn't seem as fluffy as expected, a quick whip with a hand mixer can help restore its light, airy consistency to match the fluffiness seen in our photos.

Why is my tallow a little different than last time?

Each batch of our tallow products may vary slightly from the last because we commit to using nontoxic, natural ingredients that are sourced directly from nature and handcrafted with minimal processing. These slight variations are a testament to the purity and artisanal quality of our products, as they reflect seasonal changes in the environment and the unique characteristics of each ingredient's natural state.
