It is a daily, hourly and on some days a struggling by the minute effort - but it is so worth it! Dr. Caroline Leaf says it best: "As we think, we change the physical nature of our brain. As we consciously direct our thinking, we can wire out toxic patterns of thinking and replace them with healthy thoughts." Research has shown that our physical, emotional and spiritual health are tightly intertwined. Physical illness can actually have emotional and even spiritual ramifications just as spiritual difficulties can impact your physical body along with your emotional health. God created us in a way that all three are tightly connected. In order for true healing in life to occur, it must happen both in body, mind and spirit. I realized early on that to come out of the darkness of this valley as the most complete version of myself, I would have to face all three.
You can't expect to heal the whole, if you only treat in part. Every part of you deserves healing and God is in it all. To those who know it takes more than one thing to heal and to those who run straight to Jesus... your faith is never the question. <3 Oh to redeem the narrative that so many of us have experienced in these valleys. I believe that we can only see the most clear picture of our Healer when we realize that He is in every element of this journey. But that is a post for another time.
In my own life, I have been so blessed to be working with Doctors who view healing through this lens of faith where the body, mind and spirit all need to be worked on. It resonates strongly with things I was already taught through my counseling and psychology classes in college. In my own life, I have been working through a few different books that dive deeper into these topics. Daily I have been working to replace unhealthy thought patterns and habits for new life-giving practices. Trying to overcome the stress this valley can bring by instead embracing God's perfect peace and His promises for me. Replacing defeating thoughts with God's redemptive story for my life. Breaking generational curses, strongholds and soul wounds that could be hindering our family. Dealing with all those pesky "I cant's" my brain tries to tell me and instead believing that with God all things are possible - even full healing!
I believe what the Bible says - the power of life and death is in our mouth. We each have the power of what we choose to speak and believe in our lives and situations. You may not be able to change what happens in life - but you can control your response to it. That response is so important. I want to choose to have a positive outlook and fight for the good that is in my life and situation. It is so easy to be focused on what I can't control and all of the unknowns that may be ahead. I have to make it a daily effort to choose to control what I can and praise God for all that I do have while letting Him do what only He can do in my life. I can control my thoughts, my words, and my actions. Each one of these things has the power to help set me up for success.
The verses below are some that I choose to continually flood my mind with. Renewing your mind is a powerful practice that I know the Lord will bless. Join me as we take our thoughts captive and let Jesus help us to find true health, freedom and wholeness. Feel free to message me if you want some good book recommendations on where to start. You will be amazed at how it can change your mindset, your day and your life.
